About the Role We are committed to supporting its students throughout their learning journey. A critical element of its quality student experience is the provision of personalised student support services. The Indigenous Dedicated Student Trainer is a program designed to provide a high level of personalised support to a specific cohort of students who identify as Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, and who are typically early in their studies, as their personal and primary point of contact.
The program pilot has showed that providing this level of personalised support to students improved students' preparedness to juggle work/family commitments and study therefore increasing the student’s success and progression through their course of study.
The scope of the Indigenous Dedicated Student Trainer role includes
Connect students with their goals and motivations for enrolling and work with them to co-create a personalised success plan that provide opportunities to build on their motivations for study and skills required to succeed. Including, study expectations, time management, procrastination, motivation, and self-care.
Established regular check in points with the student
Handle outbound Training interventions for their students
The Indigenous Dedicated Student Trainer will have a broad and versatile role that involves working closely with Outbound Student Support Leadership. The main responsibility of this role is to keep your cohort of students engaged and motivated throughout their studies, from the start of the teaching period until the census date and beyond.
The Indigenous Dedicated Student Trainer will also be the first point of contact for a wide range of enquiries from students, and the Trainer will have the ability to decide when to increase support for students and when to transfer administrative issues to the Student Adviser and/or MTC team. This role requires proactivity, self-motivation, and able to manage your own workload effectively.
Responsibilities Ongoing development of the Dedicated Student Trainer Role
Provide and direct students to resources and services that will provide excellent support for students
Build knowledge and capacity of a broad range of issues within the student lifecycle
Assist in the creation and implementation of processes and procedures which enhance the student experience
Participate in projects at key points within the student lifecycle to enhance the student’s online experience (e.g. orientation, intervention and support projects)
Help build and establish a new continuing student touchpoint framework Student Support
Contact Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students at critical points in their learning journey to offer practical and professional support to achieve their academic goals
Utilise evidence-based interventions to promote student success
Provide change management support for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students at risk
Facilitating one-on-one appointments and group webinars covering topics including overcoming procrastination, finding motivation, time management, and self-care
Welcome and support new Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students as they transition to online study
Collaborate with Swinburne’s MTC to ensure Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students are aware of the support and services available
Provide ongoing support to continuing Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students
Provide cultural advice and support to both students and staff
Create sense of community and belonging on campus and online
Requirements
An undergraduate degree in Psychology or similar
Excellent interpersonal communication skills to facilitate the provision of advice and support for students
Skills and experience in Training, counselling or related area
Ability to reflect on practice and formulate strategies and processes to effect change
Comfortable to work within a phone-based support context
Experience with Appreciative Advising, Positive Psychology, Brief Solution Focused, or Strengths based Therapies
Demonstrated ability to be flexible, resourceful and adaptive
Ability to positively contribute to the development of an innovative, values-based team culture
A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures and an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances of Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander peoples
A demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, including the requirement for proper negotiation and consultation, with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples on matters relevant to the delivery of education services Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander peoples
