First Nations Board Delegate
We have an exciting governance opportunity available for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person to become an Independent Aboriginal (or Torres Strait Islander) Delegate of a regional water corporation Board and Board Committee(s).
This one-year appointment is a part-time role and will support the successful applicant to develop skills and experience to apply for a future full directorship within the water sector or elsewhere. During the period of engagement with the corporation, there will be the opportunity to provide insight and share knowledge into a broad range of areas, including environmental and water management and its connection to the Aboriginal community and Traditional Owners.
Location: Newhaven, VIC
Type: Part time, 12-month contract
Salary: $18,497 per annum plus super, plus a Board Committee Member payment of $5740.02 per annum (no super paid), per committee. Based on participation in two committees the total remuneration is circa $30k. Reimbursement for travel based on the ATO rate (currently $0.85/km) is also provided

Role Purpose
The role will provide the opportunity to develop director skills in water sector governance, in a supported environment on a developmental basis.
At Board level, this will include the areas of policy, strategic planning and strategic plan execution oversight, risk identification, treatment and management. The delegate will also have the opportunity to join one or two of the Board Committee areas, such as:
- Audit & Risk (ARC)
- People, Safety & Community (PSCC)
- Infrastructure, Sustainability & Innovation (ISIC)
The role will include obligations relating to confidential information conflicts of interest, which will be reflected in the employment contract. The delegate does not have a formal decision-making role or voting rights on the board.
Prior to meetings, the delegate will need to read and consider papers, attend induction and other Board training, including the opportunity to complete AICD training, and review and respond to ad hoc Board emails.
Time Commitment
- For the remainder of 2024, there are meetings in late October and early December. The applicant will attend Board and 1 or 2 of the 3 Committees. Each meeting currently usually runs for between 1 – 3 hours.
- In 2025, there will be 6 scheduled Board meetings, as well as 3 online meetings if determined by the Board Chair and 1 strategy day) and Committee meetings (ARC meets 5 times/year and the PSCC & ISIC each meet 2 times/year).
- In-person meetings will be held at either the corporation’s head office in Newhaven, another location in their catchment area, or Melbourne CBD. Some meetings may be held virtually via video conference.
Knowledge, Skills & Support
Previous Board/governance experience is not a requirement, and candidates of all ages are encouraged to apply.
Mentoring and support will be provided for the delegate, including from the Board Chair (or other nominated Board Director), the Managing Director, the Board and Mob Jobs as an external party.
There will be the opportunity to complete director training with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).
